Carving the scroll

The rough pattern was cut out with a band saw.

The hand tools consisted of a coping saw, a standard chisel, a gouge chisel, a rat-tail file, sandpaper and a scraper.

I started by removing some of the wood with the coping saw.

Once I made some cuts I started removing the wood with the standard chisel.

With the chisel I created the scroll shape first.

Once I was pleased with the shape of the scroll, I used the gouge chisel to bevel it in and carve the fluting. This was how it looked after.

It turned out much better that I expected.
